How do I kill loose Fruit Flies?

Tired of loose fruit flies in the house? Then make a fruit fly trap! You'll need just a few basic ingredients that you probably have around the house to conquer the annoying little pests!

Step 1: Choose your Weapons

Fortunately, these are probably already in your pantry or under your kitchen sink. No need to visit the armory!

1. Cup - Size doesn't matter too much. I prefer disposable plastic cups, so it's simply a matter of throwing them out after they've served their purpose.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar - Fruit flies love the smell of apple cider vinegar, or any other fruit based products. Any fruit juice or wine will work as well, but apple cider vinegar seems to have a longer shelf life at room temperatures.

3. Dish soap - If you don't already have some of this in the house, I'm sure you have bigger problems than fruit flies.

Step 2: Pour Apple Cider Vinegar into the Cup

Pour the liquid slowly into the cup to a depth of 2-3 inches. The deeper the apple cider vinegar, the longer it will take for the liquid to completely evaporate, and the longer the trap will function. Generally, 2-3" will last at least a week.

Step 3: Add a Drop of Dish Soap

Add 1-2 drops of dish soap to the cup. The dish soap will break the surface tension of the vinegar, allowing fruit flies and any other pests to quickly drown. There is no need to mix or shake the liquid.

Make sure to check and replace the liquid in the trap on a regular basis, at least once a week. In my experience, the trap will generally not mold or produce unpleasant smells until much longer than a week. Make sure to place the trap somewhere where it will not accidentally be thrown out or knocked over.
