How do I feed Fruit Flies to my pet?

Josh's Frogs sells quality flightless fruit flies. Drosophila melanogaster will not have wings, while Drosophila hydei ordered from us will have wings that are not functional. We recommend shaking the fruit flies into another container, such as an empty 32oz insect cup, and dusting them with a vitamin/mineral supplement. This will coat the flies and make them more nutritious for your pet as well as hinder their ability to climb. If the flies still seem a bit too quick to safely handle, place the entire culture in a refrigerator for about 5 minutes. The momentary chill will not harm the flies, but will slow them down for several minutes, making dusting them and feeding them out to your herps easier.

If dusting the fruit flies, make sure that you do not pour excess dust into your animal's enclosure, especially if it's a naturalistic vivarium. Excess calcium or vitamin powder can kill live plants and mosses.

Fruit flies are great escape artists and will take advantage of any small cracks, gaps, or holes in an enclosure. Make sure your enclosure is escape proof, and utilize small mesh (such as No-See-Em mesh, available at most outdoor sporting goods stores) wherever ventilation is needed. If fruit flies do escape, place a cup partially filled with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap near your enclosure. Escapee fruit flies will be attracted to the vinegar and will drown.
